Sparta went into repair

On March 26, 2024, Oboronlogistics' universal dry-cargo ship Sparta, used on the St. Petersburg – Kaliningrad container line, was decommissioned and delivered to the dock of Kanonersky Ship Repair Yard JSC in the port of St. Petersburg for scheduled repairs.

In the course of the repair, under the supervision of experts of the North-Western Branch of the Russian Classification Society, the following works will be performed on the vessel:

maintenance and repair of the power plant, main engine and auxiliary mechanisms;
diagnostics and repair of the shaft line and rudder propeller complex;
maintenance and repair of cargo cranes;
Repair and painting of the ship's hull.

In addition, the Sparta will modernize the ship's communications and install a new complex working with the Russian satellite constellation.
As soon as all the work is completed, the vessel will return to the line.

In September 2022, the Sparta was relocated from the port of Novorossiysk to ensure supplies to the Kaliningrad Region in the face of a sanctions blockade by limitrophes. During this time, it transported about 200,000 tons of cargo to Kaliningrad and back, including 1,500 pieces of equipment, about 11,500 containers and 8,000 tons of general cargo.

Due to its design, Sparta can transport any type of cargo for various purposes. She has 2 holds and a cargo deck to accommodate containers and rolling equipment. The presence of powerful ship cranes with a lifting capacity of 240 tons each and a stern cargo ramp allows for vertical and horizontal cargo handling. The length of the vessel is 127 m, the width is 20 m. With a maximum load of 6,785 tons per voyage, the Sparta is capable of handling more than 400 containers at speeds of up to 12 knots.

Sparta's departure for repairs will not lead to a significant decrease in the volume of cargo transportation on the St. Petersburg-Kaliningrad line, since two other Oboronlogistics bulk carriers, Sparta II and Pizhma, continue to operate as usual.
