Ambal in the ranks

On April 15, 2024, the Ambal railway ferry returned to the Ust-Luga – Baltiysk line after scheduled repairs and was loaded in the port of Ust-Luga. In the period from April 13 to 14, 2024, the ferry made a passage from St. Petersburg to Ust-Luga, during which sea trials were carried out.

The repair was carried out as part of a regular survey under the supervision of inspectors of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. All work was completed on schedule and took a total of 3 months. Docking, defect detection of all components and mechanisms of the vessel were carried out, the hull was completely painted, as well as the rudder propeller complex and shaft lines were repaired.

Repair of shaft lines is a very complex work carried out only at the dock, and before that it was carried out on the Ambal ferry 6 years ago. Since then, it has traveled more than 400,000 miles, made 420 round trips and transported about 6 million tons of cargo, including fuels and lubricants, food, construction equipment and essential goods that are not produced in the Kaliningrad region.

Ambal was built in 1990. The last time the vessel was under scheduled repairs was in May 2021. The ferry has a special design for the transportation of railway cars, as well as rolling equipment. Vehicles of up to 150 units are accommodated on three cargo decks, each of which is equipped with five railway tracks. In addition, the ship has cabins for 12 passengers accompanying the cargo.

Ambal makes up to 6 round trips per month, the average weight of a cargo lot is 8 thousand tons.
