500 years of the Northern Sea Route

On March 10, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the celebration this year of the 500th anniversary of the development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the shortest shipping route between the European part of Russia and the Far East.

500 years ago, the Russian diplomat Dmitry Gerasimov put forward the idea of a way to get from Europe to China through the "сold seas". The prerequisite was the closure of the Mediterranean straits by the Turks. The term NSR appeared later, but it was 1525 that is considered the beginning of the study of the possibilities of Arctic navigation.

Oboronlogistics specialists have extensive experience in the NSR water area, having been participating in the Northern Delivery since 2017. The company delivered more than 150 thousand tons of cargo to the Arctic points, including food, medicines, equipment, fuel, lubricants and construction materials. In the opposite direction, about 12 thousand tons of scrap metal were removed as part of the Arctic clean-up program.

The company's vessels regularly deliver cargo to organizations involved in the development of the Arctic and the construction of military, social and industrial infrastructure facilities in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.

So, in 2024, the Oboronlogistics dry cargo ship Sparta IV made 4 coastal voyages from Arkhangelsk to the port of Bukhta Sever with various cargoes necessary for the construction of a new terminal during the summer navigation period.
